Aurlus Mabele, a Congolese singer and composer who was hailed as the “King of Soukous,” the upbeat dance hall music that fuses pop and soul with traditional African and Caribbean rhythms, passed away in Paris. He was 66.
The word “soukous” is derived from the verb “secouer,” which means “to shake” in French. As Mr. Mabele’s band Loketo gained popularity, the genre spread to dance halls in France and other countries.
