Oliver Mtukudzi (1952-2019) was a legendary Zimbabwean musician, songwriter, and guitarist. He was born on September 22, 1952, in Highfield, Harare, Zimbabwe. Known as “Tuku,” he was widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest musicians and popularized a style of music known as “Tuku Music.”

Mtukudzi’s music was a fusion of traditional Zimbabwean sounds, Afropop, and jazz, with lyrics often conveying social and political commentary. He sang in both Shona and English, making his music accessible to a wide audience. Some of his most famous songs include “Neria,” “Todii,” and “Wawona.”

Throughout his career, Mtukudzi released more than 60 albums, many of which enjoyed international success and garnered numerous awards. He was also known for his energetic live performances and captivating stage presence.

Besides his music career, Mtukudzi was an advocate for various social causes, including HIV/AIDS awareness, children’s rights, and the importance of preserving Zimbabwean cultural heritage. He was appointed as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Eastern and Southern Africa in 2011.

Oliver Mtukudzi passed away on January 23, 2019, in Harare, Zimbabwe, leaving behind a lasting legacy in African music and a devoted fan base. His contributions to music and his impact on Zimbabwean culture continue to be celebrated and appreciated.
